In many things at once, taking elements of various dance styles and techniques and even the highest exponents of jazz dance are reluctant to define it.
In the early 50's of the leading teachers "shunned" the term jazz unless specifically teaching those steps were popularized in the dance halls in the first half of the century. Instead, the classes were known as freestyle, dance for musical comedies, Afro-Cuban or primitive. Jazz classes in New York began when the dancers or choreographers, working on Broadway and in films, brought the movement into the classroom and designed heating and stretching exercises to prepare the body for specific requirements.
